The Ultimate Guide to YCB Yoga Principles: Triguna, Panchakosha, and Antahkarana

The Ultimate Guide to YCB Yoga Principles: Triguna, Panchakosha, and Antahkarana

1. The Triguna: The Three Forces of Nature

In Yogic philosophy, the entire universe is composed of three primal forces known as Gunas. These qualities exist within every human being in varying proportions, influencing our thoughts, moods, and energy levels.

  • Sattva (Purity and Harmony): This represents balance, light, and wisdom. A Sattvic state is achieved through meditation and a clean diet, leading to a calm and focused mind.
  • Rajas (Action and Passion): This quality is characterized by movement, desire, and restlessness. While necessary for productivity, excessive Rajas leads to stress and agitation.
  • Tamas (Inertia and Darkness): This force represents stability but also heaviness, laziness, and confusion. Overcoming Tamas is the first step toward spiritual growth.

Transitioning between states: By practicing at Krish Yoga Vidhayaalaya, students learn to transition from Tamas to Rajas, and ultimately stabilize in Sattva.

2. Antahkarana-Chatustaya: The Fourfold Inner Instrument

The mind is not a single entity; rather, it is a complex “inner instrument” (Antahkarana) comprised of four distinct functions. Understanding these is vital for mastering mental discipline in any Online Yoga class.

  1. Manas (The Sensory Mind): This part processes sensory inputs and coordinates the five senses. It is often indecisive and fluctuates between “should I?” and “shouldn’t I?”
  2. Buddhi (The Intellect): This is the higher reasoning faculty that makes decisions and exercises discrimination (Viveka).
  3. Ahamkara (The Ego): This is the “I-maker” that identifies the self with external objects, roles, and physical traits.
  4. Chitta (The Memory Storehouse): This is the subconscious mind where all past impressions (Samskaras) and memories are stored.

3. Tri-Sharira & Panchakosha: The Layers of Human Existence

Yoga teaches that we are not just a physical body. Instead, we exist within three bodies (Tri-Sharira) which are further divided into five layers or sheaths (Panchakosha).

The Three Bodies (Tri-Sharira)

  • Sthula Sharira: The gross physical body made of matter.
  • Sukshma Sharira: The subtle or astral body containing the mind and energy.
  • Karana Sharira: The causal body, which is the seed of our existence and the source of our deep subconscious.

The Five Sheaths (Panchakosha)

To achieve holistic health, each of these five layers must be purified:

  1. Annamaya Kosha (Food Sheath): The physical body sustained by nutrition.
  2. Pranamaya Kosha (Energy Sheath): The vital life force or breath (Prana) flowing through the nadis.
  3. Manomaya Kosha (Mental Sheath): The layer of thoughts, emotions, and sensory perceptions.
  4. Vijnanamaya Kosha (Wisdom Sheath): The layer of intuition, ethics, and higher knowledge.
  5. Anandamaya Kosha (Bliss Sheath): The innermost layer where one experiences pure joy and connection to the divine.
